I m working on a project that has a laptop mounted to a moving platform.

So i connected the white wire to the shilding wire and red wire to the core wire of the old 90w adapter s plug.
I assume the hot wire is the yellow with the green stripe.

The bad adapter has red white and black the other has blue white and black.
If this is in reference to the many dell machines using the 3 pole 7 4mm barrel connector the 3rd wire goes to a 1 wire serial chip that the laptop reads to find out which wattage power adapter it is connected to so that it can limit its power dra.

Are you saying that you cut open the cabling to see the colored wires.
I have laptop charger caple with three wires black blue white i cut off the blue one and use the black and white to charge the laptop from 12v acid battery using boost converter 19 5v the problem is the current is too high 3 to 4 amps.
